HOMEWORK

Your child will copy home learning assignments off the homework board into their assignment pads. Your child should be able to complete the assignments independently, as they are an extension of class work, but sometimes help is needed, and always appreciated.

WHY IS HOMEWORK ASSIGNED?

Homework is important to any child's school success. It is a time for your child to review and practice important skills learned in the classroom. Studying at home enhances student achievement, helping to develop self-discipline and good work/study habits. Homework doesn't only help students think about the concepts that students are learning, but it also gives additional practice to difficult skills. I know you will agree with me that it is "the practice" that helps each of us become better at whatever we try to do. Unfortunately, our school time is not long enough for students to practice everything they learned each and everyday. Homework is assigned daily (usually Mon.-Thurs.) and students should spend about 15-30 minutes each day reading a book, novel, or magazine of the student's choice. Homework is not a punishment and should be viewed as a way to improve academics. In addition to regular assignments, homework may be assigned for the following reasons:

Absence: to make up work missed during an absence
Completion: to finish work not completed at school
Practice: to help students master specific skills which have been presented in class
Preparation: to help students prepare for a quiz or test

HOMEWORK TIPS
Plan a daily homework time.
Take home everything you'll need.
Choose a quiet place to study.
Read and follow all directions.

Do your work neatly and carefully.
Ask for help is you need it, but do the work yourself.
Keep your homework in a special place.
Hand in your homework on time.

GRADED PAPERS
Graded papers will be sent home as soon as they are graded.  You will be asked to sign any grade that is a 75 or below.  Please sign and return graded papers to school with your child, the day after they are sent home, so he or she isn't detained inside during recess.
If your child brings home a "bad grade" it means he or she needs additional help in that area.  Review the paper with your child, and explain as necessary.  There is no substitute for individual attention.
